Kids' Kitchen Creation: Maggot Munch
A Festive Treat!
Flying along in our seventh year of homeschool, we have reached the first week in our festive units- one of many! We love the holidays in our home and Halloween is the kickoff.
What better way to explore new learning adventures than with fun, holiday inspired lessons. Over the years we have adventured into so many great units that have each highlighted key subjects' topics embedded deep under the guise of a fun, lighthearted theme;
For Halloween: Mummies, Vampires, Gravestones, Candy Corn, Trolls...
For Thanksgiving: Cranberries, The Mayflower, Gourds, Native Americans...
For Easter: Easter Baskets, Eggs, Peeps, The Lamb...
There's an overwhelming amount of learning that happens when you take a deeper look into topics like these, and you soon realize, learning is absolutely all around us, in even the smallest of things, which is certainly so in this week's theme:
FLIES!
Like every creepy (and sometimes gross) Halloween lesson I create for my kiddos, I was buzzing to make a kitchen creation themed upon the our topic. Quite disgusting in this case, I know- but after all, gross is one of the beauties of Halloween!
Out of my lab (also known as our kitchen) came a delightfully ugly and unusual treat, perfect for the season-
Maggot Much!
If you are fluttering around the topic of flies, or just want to indulge in a festive creation, Maggot Munch is one to add into your traditions.

Supplies Needed:
Rice Krispies Cereal
Red Velvet Cake Mix
Hersey Kisses
Butter
Chocolate Graham Crackers
1 Bag Mini Marshmallows
Sugar Cookie Dough
Parchment Paper
Let's Make It!
Step 1: Make the "meat". In a large pot, melt 4 tablespoons
of butter and add in the entire bag of mini marshmallows.
Continue to stir the ingredients until all the marshmallows
have melted to a smooth consistency.
Step 2: Add in 1 cup of red velvet cake mix to the melted
marshmallows. Continue to stir the mixture until the cake
mix has been combined, and the color has changed to red.

Step 3: To the pot of marshmallow mixture,
add in the Rice Krispies Cereal, stirring until the marshmallows and Rice Krispies are combined.
Step 4: Lay out a medium-sized section of parchment paper
on the workspace. Pour out the Rice Krispies meat onto the paper.
Allow the "meat" to cool.
Step 5: Crush up multiple stacks of chocolate Graham crackers, using your hands or rolling pin.
Step 6: Open a black treat bag and add in 2 large handfuls of crushed graham crackers.
Step 7: Once cooled, pull off a chuck of Rice Krispies "meat" and add it to the treat bag. Next, add in 2 unwrapped Hersey Kisses to the meat.
Step 8: Last, pinch off a small bit of cookie dough and shape the dough into a small worm shape to make the "maggots".
Add the shaped dough to the meat inside the treat bags.
Step 9: Use the included twist ties to close up the bags to have them resemble mini trash bags. Serve and enjoy!
