Light And Dark
Homeschool learning has undoubtedly taken us into engaging learning at every turn. Our Rembrandt Lesson Plan was no different. From the hands-on learning activities, games, and museum trip, we were creating a learning masterpiece! We certainly couldn't leave out a fun kitchen creation that shed some light on Rembrandt's most notable technique- chiaroscuro.
While this kitchen craft may not go down in art history, or be on exhibit at the Louvre, it was however a helpful (and tasty) exercise in how contrast is used in artwork to enhance a subject.
I also love the opportunity the craft allows for getting as creative and detailed as you desire, leaving lots of room for your artist to showcase their skills.
Gather your budding artist, along with these simple items, and get ready to make a toasty masterpiece!

Chiaroscuro Toast
What You'll Need:
Bread
Aluminum Foil
Butter
Pastry Brush or New Paintbrush
LET'S MAKE IT!
Step 1: Preheat the oven broiler or toaster oven to 350*.
Line a baking sheet (or use toaster oven sheet) with aluminum foil.
Step 2: Use kitchen scissors or a knife to cut off the crust from 6 bread slices to make 6 square shapes.
Step 3: Get creative! Cut out small shapes from the aluminum foil, that fit into each bread square.
Step 4: Gently press the foil designs into the bread squares. Leave the foil pieces on the bread to serve as a covering while toasting.
Step 5: Place the sheet into the oven broiler or toaster oven. Keep a close watch on the bread squares to ensure they don’t burn. Once browned, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool.
Step 6: Remove the foil pieces from each toasted square to reveal the contrasting design.
Step 7: Add 2 tablespoons of butter to a small jar and heat it in the microwave until the butter has melted. Use a pastry brush or new paintbrush to brush the melted butter onto the toast. Serve and Enjoy!
